Stronger Than Steel: Quinn Steiner’s road to recovery

Vince Steiner left with son, Quinn Steiner

New Zealand’s Quinn Steiner survived a near fatal car accident in Canada on the night of his 20th birthday in September 2025.

There was an immediate outpouring of support for the popular young Kiwi – from Brookview Genetics. His father, Vince, and one sister, Gabby, rushed to be by his side as he fought first for his life, and then for his mobility.

We’re so lucky. We’re talking 2mm and we’d have no boy – and another 2mm and he’d be paralysed from the waist down. That’s how close it was.

Perhaps the most telling comment Vince made shortly after the accident was: "We’re so lucky. We’re talking 2mm and we’d have no boy – and another 2mm and he’d be paralysed from the waist down. That’s how close it was.”

It's been a journey to get to where he is now - and, four months out from a nine-hour surgery to fuse his C2-C4 and T1-T6 - he was able to carefully participate in the NZ DairyEvent last week. A little slower and a little wiser, but back with the dairy community...doing what he loves.

The global community raised close to $200,000 towards his emergency care, surgery, recovery and the complex arrangements to get him home to New Zealand.

DDNZ's Dianna Malcolm caught up with Quinn and Vince to check in on his ongoing recovery, to thank everyone for their support, and to update the community on what Quinn's long-term prognosis is...
