Young Waikato dairy farmer Danielle Hovmand has been recognised as one of New Zealand's brightest rising stars in the primary sector, taking out the prestigious Primary Industries New Zealand Emerging Leader Award at the 2026 Primary Industries New Zealand Awards in Auckland.

The 29-year-old sharemilker was selected from a highly competitive field of finalists, with judges praising her outstanding leadership, commitment to supporting others, and significant contribution to New Zealand agriculture.

Danielle currently operates as a 50/50 sharemilker near Morrinsville alongside her partner Harry Phipps, milking approximately 250 cows. Beyond the farm gate, she has become a respected voice for young farmers and sharemilkers through her leadership roles with Federated Farmers and the Young Farmers organisation.

Judges described the Emerging Leader category as one of the strongest in the awards programme, acknowledging the exceptional calibre of all finalists. However, they said Danielle's selfless approach to leadership and dedication to helping others succeed set her apart.

According to the judging panel, Danielle combines practical farming expertise with a genuine passion for supporting the next generation of rural leaders.

Through her involvement with Federated Farmers Waikato and the Morrinsville-Ngarua Young Farmers Club, she has helped build confidence among young farmers, strengthened rural communities, and encouraged greater participation within the sector.

Her advocacy work, community involvement, and ability to connect with people across the industry were highlighted as key strengths, demonstrating leadership qualities well beyond her years.

Away from her farming operation, Danielle has raised significant funds for local charities and community initiatives, volunteered at numerous rural events, promoted agriculture through schools, Ag Days and A&P shows, and worked closely with community groups to strengthen rural connections.

The award adds to an impressive list of achievements. Danielle was named Auckland-Hauraki Share Farmer of the Year in 2022, received the New Zealand Young Farmers Contiki Local Legend Award in 2024, and was also a finalist in the 2026 ASB Alumni of the Year Award.

Federated Farmers Dairy Chair Karl Dean says Danielle's impact extends far beyond her own farming business.

"Dani is not only an excellent farmer, but also a passionate advocate for the future of New Zealand agriculture. She has consistently demonstrated a willingness to stand up for farmers and help drive positive change within the industry."

Dean highlighted Danielle's involvement in Federated Farmers' successful campaign to allow young farmers to access KiwiSaver funds to help purchase their first home or farm, describing her as a determined advocate who continued pushing for reform until change was achieved.

He also acknowledged her strong support for sharemilkers and contract milkers, noting her willingness to share knowledge and mentor newcomers entering the industry.

Speaking previously about her recognition as a finalist, Danielle credited her success to the many people who had supported her throughout her farming journey.

"There are so many people who have contributed to my journey and provided opportunities for me to step into leadership roles and achieve the things I have."

Sponsored by Lincoln University, the Emerging Leader Award recognises young people already making a significant contribution to New Zealand's primary industries. The award celebrates individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, passion and commitment while showing strong potential to shape the future of the sector.

Danielle Hovmand's achievement highlights the important role young leaders play in strengthening New Zealand's dairy industry and rural communities, ensuring a positive future for the country's primary sector.
