Breeding Better Cows — Genetics, Management and Longevity Working Together

The most profitable cow isn't always the one that fills the vat today—it's the one still filling it five or six seasons from now.

As this seven-part series comes to a close, one message has remained consistent throughout every topic. Building a profitable dairy cow is never the result of one management decision. It is the outcome of hundreds of good decisions made throughout her lifetime, beginning before she is even born.

Nutrition, calf rearing, transition management, hoof health, fertility and animal welfare all contribute to a cow's success, but the final piece of the puzzle lies in breeding the right animals for the future.

Every mating decision made this season has the potential to influence herd performance for years to come. While milk production has traditionally been the focus of breeding programmes, today's dairy farmers understand that the highest-producing cow is not always the most profitable. The cows that generate the greatest return over their lifetime are those that calve consistently, remain healthy, avoid costly health issues and continue producing milk over many productive lactations.


That is where modern breeding programmes are changing the game.

For many years, dairy breeding focused heavily on increasing milk volume. Genetic gains in production have been impressive, but they also highlighted the importance of maintaining balance. As production increased, some herds experienced declining fertility, greater metabolic challenges and shorter productive lives.

Today's breeding objectives are much broader. Alongside milk production, increasing emphasis is being placed on fertility, udder health, somatic cell count, body condition, calving ease, structural soundness and survival. These may not be the headline traits discussed around the sale ring, but together they have a significant influence on whole-farm profitability.

Healthy cows simply spend more days in the milking herd, and every additional season they remain productive improves the return on the investment made in rearing them.

Fertility remains one of the most valuable traits any dairy farmer can breed for. A cow that consistently conceives early, calves within the desired calving pattern and returns to production each season contributes far more to the business than one that repeatedly struggles to get back in calf. Poor fertility creates a chain reaction, delaying calving, reducing lifetime milk production and increasing empty rates. It also forces farmers to carry more replacement stock, adding considerably to farm costs.

While genetics play an important role in fertility, management remains equally critical. Good transition nutrition, maintaining body condition, providing balanced mineral nutrition and effective heat detection all work alongside strong genetics to produce the best reproductive outcomes. Neither breeding nor management can achieve their full potential in isolation.

Equally important is breeding cows that suit the farming system they will spend their lives working in. There is no such thing as a perfect dairy cow. The ideal animal for a high-input housed operation overseas may not thrive under New Zealand's pasture-based farming systems. Likewise, cows expected to walk long distances over challenging terrain require different strengths than those spending most of their time on concrete.

Successful breeding begins by asking a simple question: what type of cow performs best on this particular farm?

For many New Zealand farmers, that means selecting cows with excellent walking ability, sound feet and legs, strong udders, good temperament, efficient feed conversion and the ability to maintain body condition throughout the season. These practical characteristics often contribute more to long-term profitability than chasing maximum production figures alone.

The best dairy cows aren’t remembered for one outstanding season—they’re remembered for quietly delivering five or six consistently profitable ones.

One of the greatest expenses on any dairy farm is replacing cows that leave the herd too early. Every replacement heifer represents years of investment before she produces her first litre of milk. Feed, labour, animal health costs and rearing expenses all accumulate long before she enters the milking herd. When mature cows are culled after only two or three lactations, those costs must continually be repeated.

Longevity changes that equation entirely.

A cow that remains healthy and productive through five, six or even seven lactations spreads her rearing costs across far more milk production. She requires fewer replacements to maintain herd numbers and often becomes one of the most profitable animals on the farm. Older cows also provide valuable stability within the herd, having already proven their ability to perform under the farm's management system and environmental conditions.

Selecting replacement heifers therefore requires more than simply choosing daughters from high-producing cows. The most successful replacement programmes also consider the long-term performance of the cow family. Daughters from cows that calve early each year, maintain good udder health, avoid lameness, hold body condition and consistently remain in the herd often become the foundation of highly profitable dairy herds. Good farm records allow these families to be identified and retained, ensuring each new generation continues building on proven strengths.

Of course, genetics alone cannot overcome poor management. Even the highest-ranked animals cannot perform if nutrition is inadequate, transition cows are poorly managed or animal health problems are left unchecked. Likewise, average genetics supported by outstanding management frequently outperform elite genetics that are poorly cared for. The greatest success comes when breeding and management work together, allowing cows to express their full genetic potential.

The dairy industry continues to evolve, with increasing pressure to improve environmental performance, labour efficiency and overall profitability. The cows of the future will need to produce well while remaining fertile, healthy and resilient. They will need to convert pasture efficiently, cope with changing seasonal conditions and remain productive for longer than ever before.

Every breeding decision offers an opportunity to move one step closer to that goal.

As this series has demonstrated, profitable dairy cows are not created by chance. They are developed through careful planning, sound management and thoughtful breeding decisions made over many years. When farmers combine excellent genetics with outstanding management, they are not simply producing more milk. They are building herds filled with cows that remain productive, profitable and resilient for season after season—delivering the kind of longevity that underpins a truly sustainable dairy business.
