The three weeks before calving and the three weeks afterwards are often called the transition period—and for good reason. This short six-week window has an enormous influence on milk production, fertility, animal health and longevity throughout the entire lactation.

It is also the period when cows experience the greatest physiological change of the year. They are preparing to calve, produce large volumes of milk, recover from birth and transition onto a high-energy diet—all while their immune system is naturally under pressure.

Get this period right, and cows hit the ground running.

Get it wrong, and farmers can spend the next ten months trying to recover lost production.

The transition period may last only six weeks, but it influences every litre of milk, every pregnancy and every health event that follows.

Preparing cows before calving

The dry period should never be viewed as a holiday.

While milk production has stopped, the cow is undertaking one of the biggest metabolic adjustments of her life. Her rumen microbes are adapting, the udder is preparing for milk production, the growing calf demands more nutrients every day, and hormone changes are setting the stage for calving.

Every decision made during this period influences what happens after calving.

The goal isn't simply to have cows calve safely.

The goal is to have cows calve healthy, hungry and ready to milk.

Nutrition sets the foundation

One of the biggest mistakes is assuming dry cows require very little attention nutritionally.

While energy requirements are lower than during peak lactation, nutrient balance becomes even more important.

Over-conditioned cows entering calving are at greater risk of metabolic disorders, while thin cows often lack sufficient reserves to support early milk production.

The aim is consistent body condition rather than dramatic gains or losses during the dry period.

Good quality forage, controlled energy intake and balanced minerals help prepare both the rumen and the cow's metabolism for the rapid increase in feed demand after calving.

Slow, steady preparation almost always delivers better outcomes than trying to correct problems after calving.

Minerals matter more than many realise

The weeks leading into calving are when mineral management has the greatest impact.

Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and trace minerals all play vital roles in muscle function, immunity, colostrum quality and metabolic health.

Calcium receives the most attention because demand increases dramatically as milk production begins.

If cows cannot mobilise calcium quickly enough from their bones and absorb enough from the diet, blood calcium levels fall.

Even when cows don't show obvious milk fever, many experience subclinical hypocalcaemia.

These cows often appear slower to rise, eat less, produce less milk and become more susceptible to retained membranes, mastitis and displaced abomasums.

Helping cows prepare their calcium regulation system before calving is often far more effective than simply treating milk fever afterwards.

Managing energy balance

Immediately after calving, milk production increases much faster than feed intake.

This creates what's known as negative energy balance.

The cow simply cannot consume enough energy to match the demands of milk production, so she begins mobilising body fat.

Some mobilisation is perfectly normal.

Excessive mobilisation, however, increases the risk of ketosis and fatty liver disease.

Cows with reduced appetite enter a vicious cycle—eating less, mobilising more fat and becoming progressively less able to recover.

Maintaining appetite through the transition period is therefore one of the most valuable management goals on any dairy farm.

Fresh, palatable feed, minimal competition at the feed face, comfortable lying areas and low stress all encourage cows to keep eating when they need it most.


Preventing ketosis before it starts

Ketosis is often viewed as a disease that appears after calving.

In reality, its foundations are usually laid before calving.

Over-fat cows, inadequate transition diets, inconsistent feed quality and sudden dietary changes all increase risk.

Subclinical ketosis frequently goes unnoticed, yet it quietly reduces milk production, delays cycling and increases susceptibility to other diseases.

Early detection through monitoring high-risk cows can prevent much larger production losses later in lactation.

Like many transition disorders, prevention remains significantly cheaper than treatment.

Supporting the immune system

Around calving, the cow's immune system naturally becomes less effective.

This temporary reduction allows infections that would normally be controlled to gain a foothold.

Mastitis, metritis and retained membranes are all more common during this period.

Supporting immunity isn't about one miracle supplement.

It comes from the combined effect of balanced nutrition, adequate trace minerals, clean calving facilities, low stress, good ventilation and excellent hygiene.

Every small management decision contributes to a stronger immune response.

Healthy transition cows generally require fewer treatments, recover faster and return to peak production more efficiently.

The transition period lasts only a few weeks, yet its effects are measured across an entire season.

Better body condition helps cows remain productive through multiple lactations.

Rather than focusing solely on treating transition diseases, progressive dairy farmers increasingly focus on preventing them altogether.

Because every metabolic disorder avoided is one less obstacle standing between a cow and her full productive potential.

Building profitable cows isn't just about breeding better genetics or feeding more supplements.

It's about recognising that some of the most valuable management decisions happen quietly during the weeks when cows aren't producing milk at all.
